Yep, it’s a camera…it wasn’t a gift either…I bought it…and if that ain’t bad enough Father, I use it and carry it purty much everywhere I go! I feel terrible but I caint help it Father…

So all this confessin’ is useless?!
Well then…I feel better already!
Truthfully dear readers & fellow Sketchers & Sketchettes…I don’t think much sketching would go on for these blogs we keep if we couldn’t gather reference material and ideas with a small digital camera. Life ain’t as simple as it used to be in the days of Davinci, Michelangelo, Winslow and the boys. We all actually have to get a JOB! Instead of messin’ around with drawin’ and paintin’ all day. [in the field]
So all God’s chil’n is forgiven! Get a Camera!

Well, I bet that DaVinci and Michelangelo WOULD have used a cameras if they
had had some. DaVinci seemed to have messed around a lot with the idea of a camera obscura.

I agree Annie! I think they would have as well.
They are truly great for gathering reference material. Not good for following tit for tat as a painting necessarily, but for information gathering. It’s always more fun to paint or sketch from life when you can and the results seem to be more lively I’ve noticed. But we are not always able, sooooo…:-)

Digital is easy! Far better than film regarding point and shoot. The little camera I have is excellent for general artist type photography. You could go a step further and get a longer zoom but it’s not absolutely necessary. This one has served me well

I used to teach photgraphy and have more cameras than you could shake a stick at (though why you want to I have never understood . . . . where DOES that phrase come from?)
Anyway I digress. On a daily basis, I tend to use my phone: it’s one less extra thing to carry and I don’t get drawn into ‘taking a photograph’ it’s just a reference.
When I had an iPhone I’d use it for reference photos but alas, I dropped it, shattering the screen
Now the phone I have is rather poorly endowed when it comes to its camera. Thus the little Canon. I do believe though that if phone cameras ever do become a bit more sophisticated, such as having a decent zoom and good low light capabilities, I’ll just get one of those and use it. To simplify what I tote around.
