Corgi Stare Down

Rosie stares down her sheep

Rosie at play.

Yes…she’s playing. Actually she’s resting from play for a few minutes.

It’s still play because she uses these moments to her advantage
to psyche out her nemisis…the sheep.
In a moment she will pop up on all fours and grab ol’ sheepy cross the back
and clamp down for a couple of good loud squeaks.

Then reposition her clamp to the little stubby tail for a good shaking.

There is nothing ol’ sheepy can do.
He is trapped in the stare down.
He can’t move.
He can’t scream.
He can’t breath.
Poor thing can’t even take a fear induced dump.

But hey…most of the time he lives in an air conditioned toy box, free of harassment, with a dozen or so other tortured souls.
It could be worse.

Getting to this stage of play with Rosie involves pre-play and post-play.
Both of which require one human, usually my wife.
My wife is Rosie’s “Jolly Playmate”.
A subject for another entry in the Book of Rosie.

BTW, this one is a spread across two pages of the sketchbook. As with all the illustrations here at Idle Minutes, you can click on it to see a larger version.

  1. Ahh, Don. If only this weren’t in your sketchbook, I would bid on it!
This is absolutely delightful. However, I see the scene resulting in a score of Sheep, O; Corgi, 1.
    Happy Christmas!

  2. What a great catch! Yours, I mean. But Rosie sounds pretty pleased with hers, too!

I love your watercolors, Don. And the little view into the lives of another well-loved dog and her family.

btw - I have a photo of Carla, our late golden retriever, in almost exactly the same pose. Not with a stuffed sheep, but with a real guinea pig.

    Thanks for the comments!
The sheep stopped keeping score a loooong time ago :-) Merry Christmas to you too.

    Hi Don and Leta:

I love your sketch….would make a beautiful children’s book illustration.
    You should do one!
Chester has od’ed on catnip because it spilled…guess the fat cat will sleep for awhile!

    Merry Christmas!

  6. Hi Marion!
Thanks for commenting :-) I’m pondering some kind of illustrated book.

Sounds like it’s time for an INTERVENTION for ol’ Chester. You know, clean up his act, turn his life around, kick the habit…

Merry Christmas to you and yours :-)

  7. The sheep looks very stoic. And another great image of Rosie.

  8. Thanks for commenting Gwynne :-)
I suppose stoicism is something that’s been shaken into him over his existence with Rosie…
